Other Islands Films is named after Renée Silverman’s first short, a fictional narrative about a 9 year-old, her father and his much younger girlfriend. Following the perspective of a girl on the cusp of childhood’s end, Other Islands captures the subtle shifting tensions and alliances over the course of an afternoon on the beach. Three years later, with Deep Water, Renée revisits the trio on a quietly devastating afternoon at a lake house. By using the same actors over time, the two films juxtapose the challenges of social connections with the enveloping beauty and solace of the natural world. As Renée’s films have expanded to include non-fictional formats, she continually strives to tell stories with a cinematic eye and enduring emotional resonance.
